Shelia’s Miniature Vineyard Houses

The Kelly House

Ocean Park, Oak Bluffs, MA

Description:

In the 1860's when the Oak Bluffs Land & Wharf Company built the houses around Ocean Park, they were all small and similar in style. Over the years many were moved away while others were enlarged and remodeled. By the early 1900's, before the days of income tax, this row of houses was known as "Millionaire's Row." Once owned by Edward Claypool, Esq., of Indiana, this Victorian gem has been lovingly restored by John and Sharon Kelly who have owned the home longer than any other family.

The Secret Garden

Circuit Ave., Oak Bluffs, MA

Description:

The lot alone was sold to the Martha’s Vineyard Camp Meeting Association in 1894 with a deeded restriction that neither party could erect a fence. This insured free access to what has become Tabernacle Ave., the official entrance to the campgrounds. This building has been a post-office, a bakery, a barbershop, & paper store until it was remodeled in 1984 to become home to a beautiful gift shop. The Secret Garden of Martha’s Vineyard.

Summer Love

Oak Bluffs, MA

Description:

Most cottages on Martha’s Vineyard were originally owned by people of moderate means who tried to outdo one another by applying decorative additions to their small houses. Most of the bungalows cost about $200 to build with household furnishings being purchased from the local home supply. Furniture for the upstairs was brought in through the second floor double doors which usually resembled those of a chapel. The houses’ filigree of “gingerbread”, named after elaborately frosted cookies made popular by London sweet shops, were produced by local carpenters.
